THROUGH THE LENS: WNY’S INDUSTRIAL PAST – TIME OFFICE AT THE LACKAWANNA STEEL COMPANY

From 1902 to 1922 the Lackawanna Steel Company grew and prospered along the Lake Erie shore in Lackawanna as a leading manufacturer of rails and sheet piling.   In 1922 Bethlehem Steel, the second largest steel company in the U.S., purchased Lackawanna Steel and operated the plant until 1983 when it closed.  The picture shows the “new” Time Office of the Lackawanna Steel Company in 1918.  Notice the poster on the far wall asking all to “help the boys” in World War I.  The employees sat on stools at desks surrounded by ledgers.  There appears to be some type of adding machines on two of the desks. The Time Office was located in the company’s administration building, the beautiful Beaux Arts Building located on Route 5 and designed by noted NYC architect Lansing C. Holding.  The building was demolished in 2013.
