The Buffalo Purchasing Managers’ Index (BPMI) climbed 3.8 points in April to a seasonally adjusted 54.7 indicating growth in the local manufacturing sector. The BPMI improvement contrasts with recent declines in both the national ISM Index and the statewide Empire State Manufacturing Survey. Buffalo’s New Orders remained strong at 66.7, down from a multi-year high of 72.2 in March. Employment was the lowest Index at 46.1, the third month in a row of contraction. All this begs the question, why is Buffalo running counter to state and national performance for the last six months or more?
